Dr. Jason Chen graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music in 1995 with a Bachelor of Music Degree, majoring in composition and piano with a 4-year scholarship. He later furthered his musical studies at the Hong Kong Baptist University, receiving the Master of Arts (majoring in composition and electro-acoustic music) and a Postgraduate Diploma of Education (majoring in Music) respectively in 2000 and 2002. A composer, pianist and researcher, he studied jazz piano and arranging with Prof. Kim Park, and composition under the tutorship of Prof. James Mobberley and Prof. John Chen, and has written over 40 compositions including works for orchestra, chamber music, electroacoustic music and writing music for TV commercials, movie soundtrack. His works have been published by Warner music, Universal music, Capital Artist, What’s music, EEG Records and Hong Kong Composers' Guild. His composition Global Warning for 12 Guitars has been selected by the Hong Kong Composers' Guild to represent the Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) at the 62nd International Rostrum of Composers (IRC) in 2015.
Jason is currently the Chair of the Research and Development Committee in the Department of Cultural and Creative Arts at the Education University of Hong Kong. He had extensive experience in curriculum development and program management as program leader for BEd, BME and sub-degree music program for 15 years. He is also a PhD in music technology at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) University, Australia, researching on composing for film and the media. He has received a General Research Fund (GRF) research project supported by Research Grant Council (RGC) to study compositional thinking in popular and classical music and a Knowledge Transfer (KT) Fund to develop a curriculum in using i-Pad to compose for secondary school. His recent publication includes a journal article published by Springer in STEAM education and a faculty-funded research project in mobile learning in music education. His articles have been published by the top-ranked journals - International Journal of Music Education, Research Studies in Music Education, Music Education Research, Oxford Handbook of Music Technology and Education.
He was the jury panel for New Generation Concert, conducted various workshops for HKAPA, HKCG and EDB and received composition commission from Musicarama 2011. He serves as the external assessor and one committee members for the DSE music curriculum at EDB. He is the editorial board member of the International Journal of Music Education (IJME) and Media Journal of Music Education(MJME). He is appointed as the research commissioner of International Society of Music Education (ISME) and subject specialist by HKCAAVQ. He is a recipient of the Dean's Research Output Prize 2015-16, Dean's Knowledge Transfer Prize 2018-19 and awardee of the International Outstanding E-learning Award 2017-18.
